Current Opportunites

Co-op & Internship Program

Northern Justice Watch is pleased to announce our Co-op and Internship Program, designed to
provide students with meaningful, hands-on experience in human rights advocacy and
international justice work. Our program offers students the opportunity to contribute to real-world
initiatives while developing professional skills in a collaborative, mission-driven environment.
As a Canada-based collective committed to fighting crimes against humanity, NJW brings
together an international team of human rights activists, legal practitioners, educators, and
journalists. Our interns and co-op students will work alongside this diverse team to illuminate
human rights violations worldwide and provide a voice for the oppressed.

Program Structure

Positions Available: 6 positions per cycle across NJW teams
Duration: Flexible, based on academic program requirements

  • We accommodate various co-op and internship durations required by different
    universities and programs
  • Typical placements range from 4 months (semester) to 12-16 months (extended co-op)
  • Start dates are flexible and coordinated with academic calendars

Time Commitment:

  • Determined in consultation with the student and their academic institution
  • Part-time and full-time options available
  • Flexible scheduling to accommodate academic commitments

Work Format: Fully remote

  • All work conducted online through digital collaboration tools
  • Flexible hours to accommodate different time zones and academic schedules
  • Regular virtual team meetings and check-ins

Academic credit: Unpaid position with academic credit eligibility

  • Students may receive academic credit through their university’s co-op or internship
    program
  • NJW will work directly with academic institutions to fulfill credit requirements
  • Comprehensive professional development and mentorship provided
  • Reference letters and certificates of completion upon successful program completion

Academic Status:

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at a recognized
    post-secondary institution
  • Program must offer co-op or internship credit for external placements
  • Good academic standing as defined by home institution

Skills and Qualities:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently in a remote environment
  • Commitment to human rights and social justice
  • Cultural sensitivity and ability to work with diverse, international teams
  • Proficiency with digital collaboration tools (or willingness to learn)
  • Strong organizational and time management skills

Preferred (but not required):

  • Previous volunteer or internship experience
  • Familiarity with human rights frameworks

  • Applications accepted: On a rolling basis
  • Review period: Applications reviewed within 2-3 weeks of submission
  • Interview process: 15-30 minute video interview with HR and relevant team lead
  • Placement notification: Within 1 week of interview
  • Start date: Coordinated with academic calendar and student availability

1. Justice and Accountability Team
Ideal for: Law students, political science students, international relations students, criminology
students
Responsibilities may include:
● Legal research and case documentation

● Understanding of international human rights law and mechanisms

2. Communications and Social Media Team
Ideal for: Journalism students, communications students, media studies students, marketing
students, graphic design students
Responsibilities may include:
● Content creation for social media platforms
● Press release and article writing
● Digital campaign development
● Media monitoring and analysis
● Visual content design

● Strategic communications for nonprofit organizations

3. Victim Support Team
Ideal for: Psychology students, social work students, counseling students, human services
students, sociology students
Responsibilities may include:
● Supporting victim outreach initiatives

7. Program Development Team

What You’ll Do

  • Create and edit social media content (Instagram, LinkedIn, X, YouTube)

  • Support newsletters, blogs, and website content

  • Assist with podcast and video production

  • Research global human rights issues

  • Develop ethical, survivor-centered storytelling
