UKRAINE

Ukraine, a country located in Eastern Europe, is known for its rich history, diverse culture, and breathtaking landscapes. With a population of over 44 million people, Ukraine has a unique blend of traditions, influenced by its Slavic roots, as well as its interactions with neighboring countries. Ukraine gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 and has since undergone significant political and social changes. It is now a democratic nation, striving to strengthen its economy and establish strong international relations. The capital city, Kyiv, is a vibrant cultural hub, boasting stunning architectural landmarks like St. Sophia’s Cathedral and the golden-domed Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. Despite ongoing challenges, Ukraine’s resilient people continue to shape the nation’s future, embracing their heritage while fostering innovation and progress. The country’s dynamic blend of history, culture, and natural beauty makes it a fascinating destination for travelers and a place of intrigue for those interested in exploring Eastern Europe.
Policy on Human Rights Protection in Ukraine
Northern Justice Watch is committed to protecting human rights globally, emphasizing accountability for crimes against humanity and war crimes. We are aware of the escalating conflict and allegations of human rights violations in Ukraine, and we focus our attention and resources on fostering justice and accountability for Ukrainian newcomers and survivors seeking support from our organization. To achieve this, we will, among other things:
- Monitor, document, and publicly report on human rights violations in Ukraine by relying on evidence-based findings and remaining impartial in our documentation;
- Provide advocacy and support tailored to Ukrainian newcomers and survivors seeking support from our organization, and focus on the protection of civilians and the promotion of humane treatment of prisoners of war;
- Form strategic partnerships with other organizations and government bodies at all levels to provide relief to Ukrainian newcomers and survivors seeking support from our organization;
- Engage in interventions to facilitate the opening of investigations and other redress-seeking processes for Ukrainian newcomers and survivors seeking support from our organization;
- Offer assistance to Royal Canadian Mountain Police (RCMP) and any other future Canadian organization in their investigations of war crimes in Ukraine by providing insight and evidence collected by Ukrainian newcomers and survivors seeking support from our organization, and making either direct or amicus curiae interventions when necessary.
We stand with the Ukrainian people during this challenging period. We reiterate the immediate need to uphold international humanitarian law and urge government bodies at all levels to actively investigate the allegations of serious atrocity crimes in Ukraine. We unwaveringly believe in the dignity and worth of every individual and are committed to restoring justice and peace in Ukraine.
