LIVE Project Seminar #8 Explores Case Studies of Atrocity Crimes Affecting Specific Communities
On April 26, 2026, Northern Justice Watch hosted the eighth seminar in its Legal Information and Vital Education (LIVE) Project series at the Toronto Public Library – North York Central Library. The seminar, titled Case Studies of Atrocity Crimes Affecting Specific Communities, brought together legal experts, academics, advocates, and community members for an important discussion on atrocity crimes, human rights, and the challenges faced by vulnerable populations.
The event featured keynote speaker Toby Mendel, founder and Executive Director of the Centre for Law and Democracy. Drawing on decades of experience in freedom of expression, access to information, and democratic governance, Mendel examined the role of legal frameworks and human rights protections in preventing and responding to atrocities affecting marginalized communities. His presentation highlighted the importance of accountability, transparency, and public participation in safeguarding democratic societies.
Joining the discussion were guest speakers Mehmet Efe Caman and Joanne M. Hodges, who contributed diverse perspectives on contemporary human rights challenges and the broader implications of atrocity crimes on affected populations. Through case studies and analysis, the speakers explored patterns of discrimination, persecution, and violence that continue to impact communities around the world.
Throughout the seminar, participants engaged in thoughtful discussions about the legal, political, and social dimensions of atrocity crimes. The conversation emphasized the importance of education, public awareness, and community engagement in addressing hate, polarization, and systemic injustice. Attendees also had the opportunity to ask questions and share perspectives, contributing to a meaningful exchange of ideas.
The seminar was offered both in person and through livestreaming, enabling broader participation from audiences across Canada and internationally. According to Northern Justice Watch, the event aimed to make legal and human rights education more accessible while fostering informed dialogue on pressing global issues.
As part of the ongoing LIVE Project seminar series, the event reinforced Northern Justice Watch’s commitment to promoting legal literacy, advancing human rights education, and creating spaces for informed discussions on issues affecting communities worldwide. Through initiatives such as these, the organization continues to encourage critical conversations about justice, accountability, and the prevention of future atrocities.
