Northern Justice Watch is pleased to invite you to LIVE Project Seminar #9, an engaging online discussion exploring the legal complexities of prosecuting atrocity crimes and the critical role of strategic litigation in advancing justice and accountability.
Despite growing international recognition of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes, bringing perpetrators to justice remains an enormous challenge. From gathering reliable evidence and protecting witnesses to overcoming jurisdictional limitations and political obstacles, legal practitioners face significant barriers in pursuing accountability. This seminar will examine these challenges while highlighting how strategic litigation has become a powerful tool for promoting human rights, strengthening the rule of law, and supporting survivors.
The seminar will feature an exceptional panel of internationally respected experts, including Toby Mendel, Founder and Executive Director of the Centre for Law and Democracy; Joanne M. Hodges, human rights defender and Founder of the Alliance of Genocide Victim Communities; and Sherap Therchin, Executive Director of the Canada Tibet Committee and prominent human rights advocate. Together, they will share their expertise, real-world experiences, and perspectives on some of today’s most pressing international justice issues.
Participants will gain valuable insight into why atrocity crimes are often difficult to prosecute, the legal and political barriers that hinder accountability, and how strategic litigation can be used to advance justice for victims and affected communities. Through practical case studies and examples, attendees will develop a deeper understanding of international human rights advocacy and the legal mechanisms available to combat impunity. The seminar will conclude with an interactive question-and-answer session, providing participants with the opportunity to engage directly with the speakers.
